The lymphatic system is a network of vessels, nodes, and organs that collects excess fluid leaking out of blood vessels into body tissue and returns it to the bloodstream, while also filtering that fluid for pathogens along the way. When an infection is nearby, the nodes in that area can swell noticeably as immune cells multiply to fight it off, which is why a sore throat often comes with tender, swollen glands in the neck.
The system also includes the tonsils, spleen, and thymus, each playing a role in producing or maturing infection-fighting white blood cells. Because the lymphatic system also provides a route through which cancer cells can spread beyond an original tumor, doctors routinely check nearby lymph nodes when staging many types of cancer.
